The Dragon Drum Story
So one of my old drumming pals one day in 2002 chalenges me with building a REALLY Big Drum. And thus the concept of the dragon drum was born after many hours running the figures and devising consrtuction methods (a drum of this size could not be built the way its smaller cousins are made) I purchased the wood to build it, and began the process. The images below were taken periodicly over the next 6 months.
Each half of the drum was glued
together separately and joined
later in the process. I used a
clamping jig made from an old
piano crate.
Above you can see the layout for carving the scales and the carving process in progress.
Here are both halves along with the tension rings, and the head
(on thefloor in front)
In these Photos I'm in the painitng phase of the project. It actually took as many hours if not more to paint the scales as it did to carve them.
Also notice that the bottom row of scales is missing, once the halves were joined I carved those in, afterward, even I couldn't tell where they were joined.
Once It was finised I could finally relax.
Dragon was laid to rest on a Bon-fire in late 2007, as life would have it I had no indoor storage for such a large drum and the weather finally did him in. However I saved the rings and head from him so that another may someday be born.
